Academic State Champions: Indians honored at 'The Big House'

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Comanche boys basketball team may not have made the state tournament for their work on the court, but they made it to the Big House for their work in the classroom.

Saturday, the Indians were presented the Class 3A State Academic Award. As a team, qualifying team members posted a 3.8 GPA, the best in all of Class 3A boys’ teams.

Comanche head coach Anthony Bowie is proud of his team’s award.

“It’s an accomplishment to be able to have an award like this and be able to present it to our guys,” Bowie said after receiving the award on behalf of his team. “It just goes to show the hard work that they did before the athletics. Academics is important to everybody. Without academics, you can’t do anything.”

But it was not just the team he was proud of.

“I’m proud of the community,” Bowie said. “We have a community that is willing to get behind us and hats off to our administration for all they do. It’s a blessing.”
