Lady Indians wrap up regular season

by Todd Brooks

The Comanche softball team ended the regular season Monday with a bang with an 11-0 shutout of Marlow.

The Lady Indians scored all 11 of their runs in the first inning and then cruised to the win.

Eight Comanche players got at least one hit in the game with Brighton O’Connor and Mykayla Slovak getting two each. O’Connor, Slovak, Jentry Whaley, Gracee Miller, Josey Harris and Ayli Minor each had an RBI.

Kamrey Rendon pitched four scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out two along the way.

The Lady Indians now turn their attention to the regional tournament where they will be looking to make a repeat appearance in the state tournament.

It will not be easy. After finishing second in district play, the Lady Indians will make the long ride to Perry for the regional.

Comanche (24-8), Perry (30-5), Prague (20-10) and Bethel (21-14) make up the four-team double-elimination regional.

Comanche and Perry met up earlier this season when the Maroon won in extra innings, 1-0, at a tournament in Perry. Bethel beat Prague earlier this season, 4-3.

Both Perry, the top seed, and Comanche, the No. 2 seed, made the state tournament last year where both lost in the first round.

All four teams have at least 20 wins, usually considered a benchmark for a successful season with Bethel making the biggest turnaround.

Last year when Comanche hosted a regional, Bethel came in with a losing record (7-15), but had won enough of the right games in order to qualify for the regional. The Lady Wildcats then went on to upset No. 2 seed Chisholm in the first game.

With only the winner of the regional advancing, it means at least one team will not be making a repeat appearance at the state tournament.

Comanche has won 11 out of their past 13 games heading into Thursday’s first regional game against Prague at 1 p.m. The game can be found online at the Comanche PS Athletics Facebook page. A win puts them in the 5 p.m. game against the winner of Perry and Bethel. A loss puts them in an elimination game at 3 p.m. against the loser of the other game.
