United Way BBQ Showdown this Saturday in Duncan

September 15, 2022

United Way of Stephens County is kicking off their annual campaign Friday night at the Duncan High School football game against Piedmont. While fans sit and watch the game, across the highway a dozen BBQ cook teams will be smoking brisket and pork butts, pork ribs and chicken in preparation for the big Showdown this Saturday.
With the teams competing to raise funds for United Way, they also look forward to the rewards and prizes available for various categories.
The cost to sample all entries is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 10 and under. There will also be side dishes and desserts available.

The BBQ Showdown is the United Way’s biggest annual fundraiser, and this year they plan to have more than just Kiddieland for the children to enjoy. There will be face painting and pendulum art. The Duncan Lions Club will be offering free bone density test, glucose test, and of course, eye exams. Kochendorfer Brewing Co. will be set up there, as well as some other local vendors where items can be purchased.

“We have so much going on, this is our fifth year for the BBQ competition,” said Chris Genn, U.W. Board president. “We hope to have over five hundred people come and join us for some great food and fun. We want people to feel as if they are over at our house for a BBQ.”

Nate Schacht, Community Development Director for the City of Duncan who has been on the BBQ Committee from the beginning said, “We are excited to add a cornhole tournament this year. Ryan Mora, owner of Bob’s Landmark Eatery, is coordinating this for us. We have plans to grow the event every year and hope to outgrow our current location”.

If anyone is interested in joining the cornhole competition, simply go to the Scoreholio app and register, all participants need to be at Fuqua Park at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, bags fly at 10 a.m.

All proceeds from this event will go towards the United Way’s Stephens County 12 agencies. Many of these agencies will be in attendance so please stop by their tables for more information about all the wonderful work they do for the Stephens County community. Our goal this year is to raise $275,000 to benefit each of these agencies.
“We are so grateful to not only the community for coming out but to our sponsors as well, we couldn’t do any of this without you all!” said Helen Stewart, Executive Director.
