College credit learning experiences expanded for CHS students

Thanks to a grant received from the USDA, Cameron University is providing new distance learning opportunities to Comanche High School (CHS) – one of 28 rural communities that will benefit from the grant. The new distance-learning equipment provided by CU will allow eligible CHS juniors and seniors to earn CU college credit without leaving the high school.

“Comanche students, faculty, and staff may all benefit from their newly equipped Distance Learning classroom at CHS,” says Susan Camp, who oversees distance learning for the university. “The new equipment includes a large display and provides high functionality with ease of operation. Not only can high school students begin their college degree pursuit, the CHS staff and faculty may use the equipment to earn a first or advanced degree.”  

Thanks to an appropriately equipped classroom, concurrent students at Comanche attend their CU course(s) without travelling to the CU-Duncan or Lawton campuses. Concurrent students may still opt to travel to a CU campus if desired.  However, attending from the equipped classroom at CHS will reduce travel time, require fewer adjustments to their CHS schedule, and be more economical due to a reduced fee structure.    

This fall, Comanche students can choose from a wide variety of general education classes, including College Algebra, English Composition, General Psychology, American Federal Government, U.S. History, Principles of Communication, and more. Eligible concurrent students can receive tuition waivers for as many as 27 college credit hours (nine credit hours for juniors and 18 hours as seniors). Thanks to an agreement between Cameron and Comanche High School, concurrent students also receive a notable reduction in mandatory fees.

Earning college credit while still in high school allows students to shorten the timeline to graduation once they become a full-time college student. Concurrent classes also provide high school students an opportunity to adjust to college coursework within their routine high school setting.
