Velma Evacuated as Fire Threatens Area

STEPHENS COUNTY, Okla. — The Town of Velma is being evacuated due to an active fire in the area, according to the Stephens County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials are asking residents and motorists to remain away from the Velma area until further notice as emergency crews respond to the fire.

According to the Velma-Alma Public Schools Facebook page, the school is busing students out of the area as a precaution due to the ongoing fire and evacuation.

The Stephens County Fairgrounds will be open as a shelter for residents affected by the fire evacuations.

Residents are urged to follow evacuation instructions and avoid affected areas to allow firefighters and emergency personnel to safely respond.
