Long police chase leads to man’s arrest
A Comanche area man led law enforcement on a high-speed tour of Stephens County and is facing multiple charges from an incident stemming from an attempted traffic stop that started late in the evening on July 24 and ended in the early hours of July 25.
According to court records, Jeffery Allen Herbert, 40, of Comanche, is facing several charges, including felony eluding or attempting to elude a police officer after a former conviction of a felony.
According to the affidavit, the alleged chase began on the Duncan Bypass when a sheriff’s deputy noticed a small truck going northbound at 72 mph in a 65 mph zone with a defective headlight shortly after 10:30 p.m.
According to the affidavit, the deputy turned around, caught up to the truck and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, identified later as Herbert, initially slowed down while pulling over on the shoulder of the road near the intersection of the bypass and Boren Road but did not stop. After a few seconds, the driver pulled onto the bypass and increased speed.
It would begin a two-hour chase leading through parts of Duncan, Marlow, Bray and Duncan city lakes.
The driver continued northbound on Highway 7 at a high speed, ran the stop sign at the bypass and Highway 7 and went westbound on Highway 7 before turning north on McKinley, failing to stop at the stop sign at Caddo before eventually turning east on Nabor toward the Marlow city limits. Herbert allegedly ignored a Marlow police officer pulled off on the side of the road with his lights flashing and continued toward Marlow.
Herbert then allegedly went off the roadway at Nabor and Ninth and struck a stop sign before continuing eastbound at approximately 60 mph while running three stop signs in the city limits.
The driver then left a roadway, went through a residential yard and went southbound toward downtown Marlow while ignoring another stop sign.
Herbert then allegedly turned east on Main Street/Highway 29 in Marlow and after passing Plainsman Road increased his speed to 90 mph. He continued east before turning south down Clear Creek Road. The driver then cut through a residential yard to go west on Renfrow before turning south on Goodrich Road.
At the intersection of Goodrich and Medcalf, the driver turned westbound on Medcalf. At this point, a male and a female passenger stepped out of the vehicle while it was still moving. A Marlow police officer stopped and detained the two passengers while the deputy pursued Herbert.
The driver then turned south down Clear Creek before leaving the roadway and driving through several empty camping spots before hitting the dam and eventually getting back on the road and turning eastbound on Parker. Herbert would then turn south on Morrison Road, turn west on CR 1700, south on CR 2930 and finally turn eastbound on Old Highway 7.
At this point, Herbert lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and drove into a fenceline, where the deputy blocked him in with his patrol car and arrested the driver.
During the search of the vehicle, the deputy allegedly found illegal substances.
The two passengers were taken to the Marlow Police Department where they were interviewed and released.
Herbert was transported to the Stephens County jail without incident.
