Jordan Kirkland, a senior English major from Comanche, has been selected as the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma’s first-ever Gilman scholar. She is currently spending the spring 2024 semester studying at Swansea University in Wales, United Kingdom as a Brad Henry International Scholar.

“This has been the most amazing experience of my life, and it would not have been possible without the Gilman scholarship and the Brad Henry International Scholar Program,” said Kirkland. “These programs have provided me the financial support needed to be able to participate in this study abroad experience. The fact that I am here studying and experiencing life and culture in the UK has broadened my perspective in what is achievable for people like me.”

Kirkland’s studies at the University of Wales will profoundly impact the Oklahoma English major’s literary perspective, offering a rich immersion in diverse narratives, historical contexts and linguistic nuances that deepen her understanding of literature.

“Through this program, I’ve been able to take courses in global perspectives of education and literature and society in Medieval Europe, both providing unique aspects directly relating to my future plans,” she said. “My courses have been extremely interesting in understanding the historical context of how literature began to be recorded and how various fundamental aspects of literature can be perceived from seemingly distant times.”

After graduation, Kirkland plans on pursuing a master’s degree in English literature before becoming a secondary level English teacher.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship provides grants to support students in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Administered by the Institute of International Education since 2001, the scholarship provides financial assistance for students to enhance their language proficiency, cultural understanding, and vital skills crucial for academic and career advancement.

The Brad Henry International Scholar program provides a stipend for selected students to participate in semester-long study or research programs affiliated with Swansea University. The funds cover tuition, room and board, as well as providing for additional expenses such as airfare.
