Waurika girls knock off V-A for consolation title

COMANCHE - It didn't take long for the Waurika Lady Eagles to establish their game plan and it didn't take it very long to pay off.

Using a distinct size advantage, the Lady Eagles jumped on the Velma-Alma Lady Comets early and then pulled away for a 53-25 win to claim the consolation bracket championship.

The game went much like Waurika's game the day before where they used the same formula against Bray-Doyle in a big win.

"Jasmine does a tremendous job in the post," said Ron Suter, Waurika's head coach. "She's hard to guard because she's 6-1 and unless the other team has someone that can match up against her, she is going to get double-teamed, which opens it up for the other players. The rest of the team is starting to figure that out."

Waurika went to junior post player Jasmine Henry early and often as they built an early 13-1 lead on their way to a 15-3 lead at the end of the quarter.

On the defensive end, Waurika's pressure gave the Lady Comets fits at times, leading to several turnovers.

"We played really well," Suter said. "They stay disciplined and kept the fouls down, which is what we've been trying to stress. I'm really, really pleased."

With the consolation trophy now in hand, the coach is happy with the way his team played overall in the tournament.

"We played Comanche the first night and with two minutes to go we were up five points," Suter said. "Then we had a couple of turnovers by some younger kids and we end up losing by three. That's a learning spot for the girls and that's what I preach to them is we're going to make mistakes, but as we learn from them we continue to grow and get better. That kind of loss will help us come playoff time."
