Indians have successful tournament at Madill

The Comanche wrestling team had a successful trip to Madill for a tournament this past weekend. The Comanche boys placed second as a team and the girls placed third. Both had high placers in the tournament.

“It was good, we had kind of a change of scenery,” said Casy Rowell, head coach. “We’ve been going to some high level events like Mid American and Geary and Duncan was very tough this year.”

Rowell said Madill is a newer tournament that is growing. It had 13 teams this year.

“Their gym is amazing and they’ve got a lot of good stuff going on there and they were trying to attract more teams to it,” Rowell said. “We decided to go check it out and it ended up being a good event for us.”

A large number of Comanche wrestlers were able to participate.

“It was good to see because we’re kind of seeing what our line-up is going to look like for districts and regionals, that type of stuff,” Rowell said. “We had three kids, Kanon (Clift), Eric (Roy) and Gage (Jessen) win titles for the first time at the high school level, so it was good for them.”

Comanche is hosting the district tournament this Thursday at the fairgrounds in Duncan. Girls exhibitions should start around noon, followed by the boys competing for the district at 1 p.m.

“It will be a full day, we probably won’t get done til around 6 p.m,” Rowell said. “We have some tough teams in our district. Some teams that stick out are Heritage Hall, Watonga and Hinton. Some of those teams are building the right way and it would be great for us to get to Dual State as a young team , to get qualified as a team. It would be great for our program, but it’s not going to be easy. We’re going to have to wrestle, so we’ll see.”
