Comanche teams win consolation brackets

by Todd Brooks

Both the Comanche girls and boys basketball teams suffered first-round losses at the Charles K. Heatly Classic in Lindsay last week, but both bounced back to win two games over the next two days to bring home consolation bracket trophies.

The Indians open the tournament with a 60-52 loss to Plainview. Plainview outscored Comanche 10-1 in the last half of what had been a tight opening quarter to start. The teams had five lead changes before Plainview had its run and Comanche was never able to catch back up.

“It was tough playing Plainview, they score well and they defend really, really well,” said Anthony Bowie, head coach. “It was kind of crucial for us to get two out of three at the tournament. That’s kind of what we always want to strive for.

“Western Heights was a super athletic team, so it was a good win for us. Dickson kept me up at night because of all the potential they possess. Their kids are young, but they play year-round, so it was important for us to stay locked in and stay focused. If those guys came out and starting shooting well and got some confidence, they would be a dangerous team. Our guys did respond and we got some tremendous scoring from (Colby) Shannon, so we were able to pull out and win by 18.”

Against Plainview, Comanche was led by Myles Ellis with 16 points, Dillon Ellis with 11, Briar Blair with 10 and Colby Shannon, Corbin Bowen and Hunter Lassley with five points each.

The Lady Indians picked up their second and third wins of the season at the tournament. They started the tournament out slow, scoring just 14 points in their 32-14 loss to Pauls Valley, but totaled 98 points over the next two games to pick up the two wins.

“Well, part of it was Kylie Roden was sick on Thursday, so in the second half she had her head in the trash can the whole time and our offense rolls through her,” said Braydon Robinson, head coach. “Once she got healthy the next day, things started picking up for us.”

The Lady Indians were able to do some things in the final two games that they were not able to in the first.

“We got penetration in the paint and we got more touches in the paint with kick outs and we made some shots,” Robinson said. “The lid has been on the hole for us all year and it finally came off a little bit.”

Against Pauls Valley, Kylie Roden led Comanche with nine points, followed by Karsynn Bowles with three and Drai Sparks with two.
