September 25, 2023

Peggy Smith, age 69, a longtime resident of Comanche peacefully passed away on Saturday , Sept. 23, 2023 in Oklahoma City.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. at the Comanche Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, under the direction of Comanche Funeral Home.

Peggy was born Sept. 9, 1954 in Warren, Ark., the ninth of twelve children to Robert Lee and Bessie (Maness) Richards. She was the ninth of twelve children; in fact, she had a car tag made that said  9 of 12. It became her own logo, and she loved it. Peggy grew up in Ryan, from first grade to 12th grade, graduating with the Class of 1973. Peggy worked at Round Up Cleaners for 11 years. She and Rodger Lee Smith were united in marriage on Oct. 21, 1972 in Ryan. They moved their home in Comanche on Dec. 26, 1976.

Rodger and Peggy were faithful members of Praise Assembly of God Church, until Rodger’s death on March 22, 2010.  Following Rodger’s death she took the para-pro test  for Duncan Public School, passing with flying colors, so she became a teacher’s aide at Duncan Pre-K for five years.  After her retirement she helped her teacher friends with their cutting. Peggy enjoyed being with her family, and she helping friends anyway she could. She loved genealogy, and also going out to with her friends. Peggy loved her brothers and sisters; and her daughter was her life. Her grands and great-grands increased the love, and she was so proud of them all; she absolutely loved showing them off.

She is survived by her daughter, Nicole Marie Ward, and spouse Dakota; four grandchildren: Kelsie Janae Harrel and partner Trey Hoffman, Brayden Shane Harrel, Cambry Lee Sanford, and Diesel Wayne Ward; two great-grandchildren: Aleyiah Jane Hoffman and Noah Alexander Harrel and his mom, Jazmyn Taylor;  two sisters: Patricia Ralls and Thelma Lee Keith and spouse Ed;  brothers: Ricky Lynn Richards, and Donald Ray Richards and spouse Toni; a sister in law, Carla Richards; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews; and many other family and close friends.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 39.5 years, Rodger Smith; her parents, Robert Lee and Bessie Lee Richards; her sisters: Betty Mae Lee and spouse Harold, Bessie Pauline Mills Ferguson, Barbara Lee Richards, and Shirley Mae Richards; her brothers: Merle Dale Richards and spouse Iva Joy , R.H. Richards and spouse Mary Elizabeth, and Roy Junior Richards; also nephews: Billy Mills, Bobby Mills, and Roger Keith; and one niece, Donna  Bond.

Rest in Peace 9 of 12.
