Indians geared up for 'Midnight Madness'

A community-wide event to celebrate the beginning of football practice in Comanche will take place this Sunday beginning at 9 p.m. and concluding with the first football practice at midnight at the high school football field.

There will be several things going on before the official start of fall practice.

“It’s going to be carnival-like,” said Gary Robinson, head coach. “The booster club is putting together things like games, food trucks and vendor booths. We are going to have a kids punt, pass and kick competition. We want to show the players they have a lot of community support.”

Robinson said the team is wrapping up “Summer Pride,” their weightlifting program this week.

“The team is excited to get out on the field, they want to win,” Robinson said.

The coach said numbers were good but they are also a young team.

“We will have a lot of freshmen, sophomore and juniors starting,” Robinson said. “You hear people talk about rebuilding. We are going to build this year and when we talk next year about the season, we’re going to be talking about wins.”

The night will also feature a spirit line and players running out of the tunnel like in home games.

The first 100 kids will receive a prize sponsored by Van Marshall Studios. There will also be a cornhole tournament, inflatables, hot dogs and hamburgers.

“We are going to have a countdown and when the clock reaches zero, we are going to start practice,” Robinson said. “It’s going to be great. It’s also not going to be as hot. We will practice until 2 a.m. and then come back at 6 p.m. for another practice.”
