Lady Indians ready to get season started

Comanche softball coach Jennifer White is liking what she is seeing from her small but solid team.
“It’s a good group,” White said. “They have a lot of heart and they’ve been improving in every scrimmage game we’ve had.”
The Lady Indians do not have a lot of numbers, but what they lack in quantity, they make up for in quality, led by four seniors - Kamrey Rendon, Josey Harris, Raylee Chaney and Mykayla Slovak.
“With only 12 players, our biggest challenge is going to be staying healthy,” White said. “We already have one injured that is going to be out for a few weeks.”
Rendon is the most experienced pitcher, but the coach says it is a position they have good depth in with pitchers that are more than capable of getting the job done.
“I wouldn’t say we have a No. 1 pitcher,” White said. “Kamrey is looking great. She has good speed and places the ball well. Josey has been throwing the ball well. Cloey (Kinkade) hits her spots. Caityln (Ramsey) hasn’t pitched much yet, but I think she will be just fine.”
Whoever will be pitching will have the benefit of having returning all district catcher Mykayla Slovak as a battery mate.
“That’s our greatest strength is our battery,” White said. “With Mykayla catching, Kamrey or Josie pitching and Raylee Chaney in center field, we are really solid.”
With the season opening up next Monday at Elgin, there are still some spots the coach is unsure of.
They have some holes to fill on the left side with graduation and transfers, but the coach is confident she can find the right mix.”
“We’re still moving players around,” she said. “We aren’t settled at third or first or right or left field, yet. We’ve been having some go back and forth between the infield and outfield.”
Bre Gill moves from the outfield last year to playing shortstop this year.
“She still needs to learn a few things after moving from the outfield,” White said.
The new coach has been going non-stop since she arrived in Comanche and is now less than a week away from her first game.
“It’s been crazy, but it’s all been great,” White said. “I’ve been trying to get all the things done that need to be done but the kids have been great.”
