Indians picked sixth in poll

July 27, 2023

The Comanche football team is picked to finish in the 2023 District 2A-3 race where they finished in 2022 - in sixth place, according to Vype’s annual Oklahoma Pigskin Preview magazine.

The Indians went 3-7 overall in 2022 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018 last year.

New head coach Gary Robinson will be looking to change that this year.

Not surprisingly, defending state champion Washington was picked to finish atop District 2A-3. The Warriors are followed by Lindsay, Purcell, Community Christian, Frederick, Comanche, Crooked Oak and Little Axe.

Washington is also ranked atop the magazine’s preseason Class 2A top 10 poll as they are favored to repeat. Ranked second through 10th are Millwood, Jones, Idabel, Vian, Beggs, Rejoice Christian, Claremore-Sequoyah, Kiefer and Victory Christian.

The Indians did not have any players make the All-Vype 2A team. Comanche lineman Cade White, a Kansas Wesleyan signee, made the team last year as a senior.

The Indians will be not only getting used to a new system, but will also be filing holes left by a large senior class, which had starters at every skill position and the majority of the offensive line. The same holds true on the defensive side.

Comanche kicks off the season at home against Mangum on Sept. 1 before going on three straight road trips to Marlow, Plainview and Lindsay and then returning home on Sept. 29 against Crooked Oak. After a road trip to Community Christian on Oct. 12, the Indians have back-to-back home games against Frederick and Little Axe. The final road regular season game is at Washington on Oct. 27 before closing out the regular season schedule at home against Purcell.
