Wrestling camp held

Local coaches and volunteers joined Oklahoma State wrestler Konner Doucet for the Comanche Takedown Club wrestling camp held earlier this month.

“We mostly had little kids ranging from 6 to 12 years old,” Doucet said. “We’re really just trying to get them involved in the sport of wrestling and not do anything too crazy. We worked on some agility stuff and just kind of ran some energy out of them first and then we broke into two groups.”

The groups were divided into first-year wrestlers and older, more experienced wrestlers.

“(With the first-year wrestlers) we worked basic stuff like sprawls and down blocks and stuff like that,” Doucet said. “And then we had another group where really worked with them on things like a drag series. I didn’t want to learn things like a basic double leg takedown, you learn that at every camp. So, we worked on a drag series and some moves into double legs and some go behind just to give them something a little different. Hopefully, they could pick up one thing from this camp, that would be good.”

There were also several girls at the camp as the sport among females continues to grow.

“Girls wrestling is growing every day,” Doucet said. “There’s a lot of scholarship opportunity, especially for girls’ wrestling, so it’s really something good to get your kid into if you want them to go to college.”

There were about 10 girls total at the camp.

“A couple of them had never wrestled before, which is always exciting,” Doucet said.
