Comanche gets big win on Senior Night

by Todd Brooks

The Comanche Indians easily snapped a five-game losing streak, defeating Tishomingo, 34-14, on Senior Night, last Friday

The Indians put up 14 points in the first quarter and then 20 in the second and then cruised through the second half.

“It felt really good (to get a win), especially on Senior Night,” said Casy Rowell, head coach. “It was a good game for them to go out on. It was the first game where I felt like we put it all together on all sides of the ball. We had built enough of a lead that we were able to get everybody some playing time and that’s the goal every game.”

Even though Comanche (3-5) is already guaranteed a playoff spot thanks to the new playoff rules this year, it does not mean that they do not have anything to play for the final two weeks of the season.

This Friday, the Indians travel to Class A Carnegie (1-5) for a game to replace the canceled district game with Coalgate. The Wildcats are under quarantine and cannot play.

Next Friday, Comanche travels to Lindsay where it could have huge implications for playoff seeding. The top four seeds from each district will host first-round playoff games. Going into this week, Comanche is ranked fifth in the district.

“The coaches vote every week and right now we have 22 points and Davis had 23 points,” Rowell said. “So, even though this week’s game is non-district, coaches will be watching how we do. Lindsay is in third place with 30 points, so it could depend on that game where we could finish as high as third or be in fifth place.”

Against Tishomingo (0-6), five different players scored for Comanche. The Indians started strong, getting a 21-yard touchdown run by Tucker Oliver less than a minute-and-a-half into the game.

Later in the quarter, quarterback Kooper Doucet scored on a 9-yard run. His two-point conversion pass to Brady Dobbins pushed the lead to 14-0.

Comanche then scored seven seconds into the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Doucet to Mason Kulbeth to make the lead 20-0.

The Indians would add two more scores late in the quarter.

With 2:05 to go in the half, Lake Epperson broke loose on an 18-yard run, which was followed by a two-point conversion pass from Doucet to Gage Allie that pushed the lead to 28-0.

Comanche was not done, however. Safety Devon McCarty picked off a pass on Tishomingo’s next drive that gave the ball to Comanche at its own 30-yard line.

On the first play, Doucet threw a bomb to Bryson Evans that the junior caught and outran the Tishomingo secondary for the final touchdown for Comanche on the night.

The second half featured second-team players mixed in with starters to begin the half and then mostly second-team players to close out the game.

Tishomingo scored a touchdown each in the third and fourth quarter to make the final, 34-14.

Comanche had a little fun as senior lineman Justin Jamison slipped on a number 10 jersey for the final drive of the game. The lineman did well, gaining 24 yards on eight carries and picked up a first down along the way. Senior tight end Wyatt Martin took the final snap at center as Comanche ran out the clock.
